Ingrid began painting en plein air eight years ago, after she came across a workshop taking place along the C&O Canal in Washington, D.C. It was taught by Walt Bartman of the Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo, MD. Although she had not particularly painted before, Ingrid immediately thought: “I want to do this.” And the rest is herstory... Ingrid studied and painted furiously for the next few years with prominent painters and mentors. She became a full-tme artist in 2019 with the establishment of her business ArtworkbyIngrid. Most of Ingrid’s art inspirations relate to nature and a nostalgia for the homeplace. She often paints scenes of the Washington, DC area where she primarily resides as well as Virginia’s Shenandoahs where her family has deep roots. Since
2021 Ingrid has painted many scenes of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, especially Oxford, Maryland where she maintains her art studio, South Street Studio. Each of these three places has inspired a series of paintings based on the places themselves and the “feel” or “energy” of these areas. Ingrid says, “ I love painting, both plein-air and in my home studio. My approach is to paint what makes me happy, or calls my attention, in a very loose and carefree style using bold brushwork. I paint mostly in oils but in the Fall of 2019 I began experimenting with abstract acrylics. In creating I first try to connect with my subject, capture the energy of the place, and transfer that into the painting itself. I do not draw first but dive right into the painting and mold the shapes and colors as Imove across the canvas. ”Ingrid’s paintings reflect her abstract approach to her subjects. As she puts it, she would rather get “the feeling of a place” than it’s exact details. She captures this feeling through bold dashes of lights and placement of blocks of color next to each other in a mere suggestion of objects and landscapes.
